So He became as far superior to the angels as the name He has inherited is excellent beyond theirs. — Heb 1:4 BSB
Christ was made greater than the angels, not because He became the Son of God, for He was already greater than they by nature, being their Maker and Creator. His exaltation to the right hand of the Father as heir of all things does not make Him the Son of God; He is the Son of God, and as such, He inherits all things. If I have a son, and he inherits my estate, it is not the inheritance that makes him my son, but his being my son makes him my heir. So it is with Jesus. He is God’s heir, not because He earned it, but because He is the Son of God.
The beauty and blessedness of Christ being “the heir of all things” lies in this: He is the heir in our nature. The same Immanuel who suffered and bled on earth is now at the right hand of the Father as our High Priest, Mediator, Advocate, and Intercessor. He has been given all power in heaven and on earth as the God-man (Matt. 28:18). The Father has seated Him far above all principalities and powers, above all authority and dominion, in this world and the one to come (Eph. 1:20-21).
This glory and preeminence were not given to make Him the Son of God but because He, who is by nature God, humbled Himself and took on the form of a servant, becoming obedient to death on the cross. Therefore, God has exalted Him to the highest place and given Him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus, every knee should bow (Phil. 2:6-11). The joy of heaven, the hope of the saints, and their strength come from this truth—that the Son of God, who took on human flesh, is now exalted to the right hand of the Father.
