What Seek Ye?
And when the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. Jesus turned and saw them following. “What do you want?” He asked. They said to Him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are You staying?” — John 1:37-38 BSB
We see here how easy Christ makes it for those who seek Him. When we begin to look for Him, even hesitantly or with trembling, He does not leave us to struggle alone. Instead, He quickly turns toward us to encourage and help. Christ does not stand far off, unreachable, on a lofty mountain or hidden from sight. He sees us the moment we take the first step toward Him and notices even the smallest stirrings of desire in our hearts. In the parable of the prodigal son, the father was watching and saw his son from a distance, running to meet him as he came home. In the same way, Christ runs to meet the penitent sinner who turns toward Him.
Notice Christ’s question, “What are you seeking?” He asks this of everyone who begins to follow Him. He wants us to understand our own desires and be clear about what we are seeking. Once, when two blind men cried out to Him, He asked, “What do you want me to do for you?” It is good for us to clarify our desires and needs. Many people feel a sense of unhappiness or discontent, knowing they need something but unsure of what it is. They are restless, aware of their imperfection and sin, and they begin to turn toward Christ and pray, but their prayers are vague and uncertain. Then Jesus asks, “What are you seeking?” If we define our desires clearly, He will be ready to respond.
Christ’s question also carries a promise: “Tell me what you seek, and I will give it to you.” It is an invitation to open the doors to His abundant blessings. But we must be sure we are truly seeking Him. The word “seek” implies earnestness and determination.
