Today’s Quote

A life spent in the service of God and communion with Him, is the most pleasant life that anyone can live in this world.

— Matthew Henry

Spurgeon’s Daily Help

But we don’t acknowledge God’s hand in our lives as much as we should. Our good Puritan forefathers, when it rained, would say that God had opened the bottles of Heaven. When it rains today, we think the clouds have just condensed. If they had a field of hay cut, they would pray for the Lord to make

the sun shine. We might think we’re wiser, and we consider it hardly worth praying about such things, assuming they’ll happen naturally. They believed that God was in every storm, even in every cloud of dust. They spoke of God’s presence in everything.

When a key has been turned in a lock many times, it turns more easily; in the same way, praying prepares us for more praying, and meditation leads to more meditation. What’s difficult for beginners becomes enjoyable with practice. So don’t give up on

a duty just because it’s hard; that’s proof you need to do it. Keep going until you develop the holy habit, and with God’s help, you’ll be able to say, "Before I knew it, my soul made me like the chariots of Amminadib."
