Loved unto the End

For the Lord will not cast us off forever. — Lam 3:31 BSB

God may turn away for a time, but not forever. A woman may set aside her jewelry for a few days, but she won’t forget about it or throw it away. It’s not in God’s nature to abandon those He loves, for “having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.” Some people talk about being in and out of grace as if we were like rabbits darting in and out of their burrows, but that’s not how it works. The Lord’s love is far more serious and lasting than that.

He chose us from eternity, and He will love us throughout eternity. He loved us so much that He died for us, so we can be sure His love will never die. His honor is so closely tied to the salvation of believers that He can no more abandon us than He can give up His royal robes as the King of glory. No, no! The Lord Jesus, as our Head, never casts off His members; as our Husband, He never abandons His bride. Did you think you were cast off? Why would you think such a terrible thing about the Lord who has pledged Himself to you? Get rid of such thoughts, and don’t let them take root in your soul again. “The Lord has not rejected His people whom He foreknew” (Romans 11:2). “He hates divorce” (Malachi 2:16).
