Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep. — Rom 12:15 BSB
Strangely enough, it is often easier to weep with those who weep than it is to rejoice with those who rejoice. There is something about sorrow that touches every heart and calls forth tender sympathy. Suffering disarms unkindness and, for a time, sets aside bitterness, jealousy, and resentment. Even our enemies can move us to pity when they are in pain. No one envies another’s grief.
But it’s different when we see others rejoicing. Gladness doesn’t naturally evoke the same response from others. In fact, some people feel envy and bitterness when they see others happy. This is an ungodly spirit, yet it exists in many hearts.
Rejoicing in someone else’s happiness is as much our duty as weeping with them in their sorrow. It is a true test of character to be able to celebrate someone’s success, even when we are not experiencing prosperity ourselves. This ability to rejoice with others shows a healthy and generous spirit.
