He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD. — Ps 40:3 BSB
There was an old legend that said the ancient statue of Memnon would make music when the sun rose and its light fell upon it. In the same way, when the light of the gospel touches a darkened heart, it starts to sing. No wonder salvation brings joy! Think of what we’ve been saved from—the pit of sin, and what we’ve been saved to—becoming children in God's family. How can we not rejoice when we fully understand our deliverance?
Every Christian should have a song. If we cannot sing with our voices, we should at least make melody in our hearts to the Lord. God wants every one of His children to have a song. Our song should be so deep that nothing can silence it. Paul sang in prison, even though his feet were locked in stocks and his back was scarred from whipping. No trouble or pain should be able to silence the song in a Christian’s heart.
And our lives themselves should be like songs. We might not all be poets who write hymns for others to sing, or singers who move hearts with the beauty of our voices, but we can live out hymns and songs—and that’s just as pleasing to God!
