You Make the Trenches
and he said, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Dig this valley full of ditches.’ For the LORD says, ‘You will not see wind or rain, but the valley will be filled with water, and you will drink—you and your cattle and your animals.’ — 2 Kgs 3:16-17 BSB
Three armies were dying of thirst when the Lord intervened. He didn’t send rain or a cloud, but He provided plenty of water in an unexpected way. God isn’t limited to the usual methods; He often surprises His people with His wisdom and power. This allows us to see more of God’s hand than we would in ordinary circumstances. Even if the Lord doesn’t show up in the way we expect, He will still provide for us in some way. It’s a blessing when we stop relying on secondary causes and instead look directly to the great First Cause.
Do we have enough faith today to dig trenches into which God’s blessings can flow? Too often, we fail to exhibit true, practical faith. Let us be like the child who, when going to pray for rain, brought an umbrella in faith. Let’s be on the lookout for answers to our prayers. Let us, by faith, make the valley full of ditches and expect them to be filled to the brim with God’s provision.
