"Be of Good Cheer"
I have told you these things so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take courage; I have overcome the world! — John 16:33 BSB
My Lord’s words about tribulation are true—I’ve certainly had my share. The trials don’t stop, and I can’t expect them to, as long as I’m here in this world. How can I expect comfort in a place where I’m a stranger? This is not my home. Here is the place of struggle and suffering, and my experience matches what Jesus said.
But I notice how Jesus tells me to “be of good cheer.” Unfortunately, I tend to get discouraged too easily. My spirit sinks quickly when I face hardships. But I must resist this feeling. When Jesus commands me to be cheerful, I have no right to stay downcast.
What reason does He give to encourage me? His own victory. He says, “I have overcome the world.” His battle was far more difficult than mine. I haven’t yet suffered to the point of shedding blood. So why should I despair of overcoming? Look at this, my soul—the enemy has already been defeated. I’m fighting a foe that’s already lost. O world, Jesus has conquered you once, and by His grace, He will conquer you in me again. So, I am filled with hope and sing praises to my victorious Lord!
