With long life I will satisfy him and show him My salvation. — Ps 91:16 BSB
It’s not the number of years we live that prepares us for death. Living longer doesn’t guarantee satisfaction or readiness for it. So what does the promise mean? It means that God will satisfy His people with their time on earth, whether long or short. God calls His children home at different ages, and He always brings them to a place of contentment. He leads them to understand that this life is empty and fleeting, and that being in His presence is far better. You may worry about death or feel trapped by the fear of it, wondering, “How will I handle it when my time comes?” Let me tell you.
If you are a child of God, I truly believe that when the time comes, you will not be reluctant or unwilling to go. The Lord’s power will make you willing. You will be ready to entrust your soul into His loving hands and to be with Christ, which is far better. You may not feel ready now. Think of an unripe apple—it resists being plucked. But when it’s fully ripe, it only takes a light touch for it to fall from the tree. In the same way, you will be gathered like a ripe crop when the time is right. A farmer doesn’t gather his grain before it’s ready, and neither will the Lord gather you to Himself until the right time. We can trust that He will not take us before we are prepared.
“With long life will I satisfy him, and show him my salvation.” The soul can’t truly see salvation unless the Lord reveals it, but He promises that He will. He says, “I will show him my salvation.” What more could we want? Everything we need for our journey through this life is found in that promise. Is there not enough in it to satisfy us? If these promises are for you and for me, and if they are fulfilled in our lives, what more could we possibly desire?
