Morning

But whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a fount of water springing up to eternal life. — John 4:14 BSB

The believer in Jesus finds everything they need in the Lord—enough to satisfy them now and for all eternity. The one who trusts in Christ is not weighed down by a lack of comfort, nor do they suffer sleepless nights from a lack of hope. For within their faith, they find a constant spring of joy and a fountain of consolation, leaving them content and at peace.

Place a believer in a dungeon, and they will find good company. Set them in a barren wilderness, and they will feed on the bread of heaven. Strip them of earthly friendships, and they will find the "Friend that sticks closer than a brother." Take away their worldly comforts, and they will rest beneath the shadow of the Rock of Ages. Crush their earthly hopes, and they will still trust in the Lord.

The human heart is restless and never satisfied—until Jesus enters it. Then, it becomes like a cup overflowing. There is such fullness in Christ that He alone is everything to the believer. The true saint is completely satisfied with the all-sufficiency of Jesus and thirsts no more, except to drink more deeply from the fountain of living water.

Believer, this thirst is not painful but a loving desire to know more of Jesus and His love. One saint from days of old said, “I’ve been drawing from this well constantly, but now my thirst has grown so strong that I long to put my lips to the well itself and drink deeply!”

Is that how you feel today, believer? Do you sense that all your desires are satisfied in Jesus, and now your only need is to know Him more and to experience closer fellowship with Him? Then come continually to the fountain and drink freely from the water of life! Jesus will never think you are taking too much; rather, He will welcome you and say, “Drink deeply, yes, drink abundantly, O My beloved!”

Evening

Then Miriam and Aaron criticized Moses because of the Cushite woman he had married, for he had taken a Cushite wife. — Num 12:1 BSB

Moses made a strange choice—to marry a woman whom others scorned. Yet how much stranger is the choice of the One who is greater than Moses, the One who is altogether pure and holy! Jesus, the spotless Lamb of God, has entered into a union with those who confess themselves to be unworthy and stained by sin. It is the wonder of angels that such perfect love could be given to lost, guilty humanity.

When we reflect on Jesus’ love for us, we, too, are overwhelmed with awe. How can such divine love be poured out on such unworthy creatures as we are? We know the depth of our own guilt, unfaithfulness, and sinfulness, and this only makes us more amazed at the free and sovereign grace of Christ! Jesus must have found the reason for His love within Himself because He certainly didn’t find it in us. Even since our conversion, we have continued to struggle with sin, though His grace has made us beautiful in His sight.

Tender and faithful Husband of our souls, continue Your work of making us like You, until You present us to Yourself, spotless and pure.

Just as Moses faced opposition because of his marriage, Jesus and His bride, the Church, also face the scorn of the world—especially when notorious sinners are saved. The Pharisees still sneer, saying, “This man welcomes sinners!” And the same old objection is raised, "Because He has married an unworthy bride!"

But Jesus’ love endures, and His grace continues to transform even the least deserving. Let us rejoice in His matchless grace!
