Let my teaching fall like rain and my speech settle like dew, like gentle rain on new grass, like showers on tender plants. — Deut 32:2 BSB
In this passage, we see a beautiful progression—the dew, the small rain, the rain, and the showers. This scale of heavenly moisture represents the different degrees of spiritual blessings. We shouldn’t expect that everyone will be blessed to the same extent or receive the same measure, yet all blessings are of the same nature. If you examine “the dew,” “the small rain,” “the rain,” and “the showers,” you’ll find they are all water. There’s no difference between the water in the dew, the rain, or the showers—they are all pure water, distilled from the sky.
In the same way, the blessing of God upon the soul may fall as dew on one person, as small rain on another, as rain on a third, or as showers on a fourth, yet all these blessings are spiritual and divine. They all come from the same God, through the same Jesus, and are communicated by the same Spirit. These blessings all produce the same effects to some degree—they soften, nourish, revive, and bring fruitfulness. They all descend from the heaven of Christ’s gospel, falling from the skies of grace, mercy, truth, love, His blood, and salvation.
The teaching that testifies of Jesus, and the words that proclaim Him as the Rock whose work is perfect, come as rain or dew to the soul. When God is pleased to apply the truth to our hearts, whether it comes in a small measure or a large one, whether it is dew or a shower, it is equally a sign of His mercy and love. It is also a sure proof that His power accompanies His divine truth when it touches our souls.
